What Is EXION?
EXION is an advanced aesthetic platform from BTL designed to deliver radiofrequency (RF) energy to targeted tissue.
Two EXION technologies available within the system are:
EXION Fractional RF: Combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. The clinical guide includes both insulated and non-insulated microneedle tips and allows treatment depth and energy to be adjusted based on the treatment area, skin type, patient feedback, and skin response.
EXION Clear RF: Uses a different RF applicator that does not rely on the fractional microneedle tips described for Fractional RF. Treatment energy is customized according to skin type and individual response.
That versatility is one reason EXION can be an attractive option for people who want a more personalized approach to skin rejuvenation.
Why Are People Choosing EXION?

EXION Fractional RF: Going Beyond Traditional Microneedling
Microneedling has become a popular aesthetic treatment, but EXION Fractional RF adds radiofrequency energy to the process.
During treatment, the applicator is placed against the skin and controlled pulses are administered across the treatment area. EXION's clinical protocol allows the provider to adjust factors such as energy and needle depth depending on the area being treated and the patient's response.
For facial treatments, the clinical guide specifies adjustable needle depths ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 mm, while body protocols can use greater depths depending on the tip and treatment plan.
This customization allows a trained provider to develop a treatment approach based on the individual rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all setting.
EXION Clear RF: An Option Without Microneedles
Not every EXION treatment uses needles.
EXION Clear RF uses radiofrequency energy through a specialized Clear RF 64 tip. The manufacturer's clinical guide provides treatment ranges based on skin type and emphasizes adjusting settings according to each patient's feedback and skin response.
That makes the EXION platform particularly versatile: the right approach depends on what you're trying to accomplish, your skin, and which treatment your provider determines is appropriate.

EXION vs. Traditional Microneedling
Traditional microneedling mechanically creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin.
EXION Fractional RF combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy, providing your provider with additional treatment parameters—including adjustable RF energy and needle depth.
If you've tried conventional microneedling and are interested in exploring RF microneedling, EXION may be worth discussing during a consultation.
EXION vs. Laser Skin Treatments
Laser and EXION treatments use different methods of delivering energy.
Laser procedures use light-based energy, while EXION's treatments described here use radiofrequency energy. Neither category is automatically "better." Skin type, treatment area, desired outcome, downtime tolerance, medical history, and the specific concern being treated can all influence which approach makes sense.
A consultation is the best way to determine which technology is appropriate for your skin rather than choosing solely because one treatment is newer or more aggressive.

EXION vs. Cosmetic Surgery
EXION and cosmetic surgery aren't direct substitutes.
Surgical procedures can create structural changes that non-surgical aesthetic treatments cannot reproduce. EXION, however, provides an option for people interested in improving their skin without undergoing surgery.
If your goals can reasonably be addressed through non-surgical aesthetic treatment, EXION may offer a way to pursue those improvements without immediately considering a surgical procedure.) energy with HIFES™ technology to stimulate facial muscles while treating targeted areas of the face.
For more significant concerns, surgery may still be the more appropriate option. The important question isn't "Which treatment is the most aggressive?" It's "Which treatment is appropriate for what I actually want to improve?"
What Is an EXION Treatment Like?
Your experience will depend on the specific EXION treatment being performed.
Before treatment, the clinical protocol calls for jewelry to be removed from the treatment area and the skin to be thoroughly cleaned of makeup or cosmetics. Hair may also need to be removed from the treatment area. For treatments where it is needed, anesthetic may be used and must be completely removed before treatment begins.
During treatment, your provider selects treatment parameters based on factors including the targeted tissue, anatomical location, skin type, tolerance, and observed skin response. The manufacturer recommends test shots and continued visual monitoring of the skin during treatment.
How Many EXION Treatments Will I Need?
There isn't one treatment schedule that's appropriate for everyone.
BTL's clinical guide lists 2–5 treatments for both Fractional RF and Clear RF protocols, with recommended intervals ranging from 1–6 weeks. Importantly, the skin should be completely healed before another treatment is performed.
Your actual treatment plan may differ depending on your skin, treatment area, goals, response, and your provider's clinical judgment.
Is There Downtime After EXION?
Recovery varies by treatment and by person.
BTL's post-treatment guidance recommends avoiding irritation to the treated area for approximately 24–48 hours, avoiding sun exposure for several days, and using broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen until the area is completely healed. Makeup should only be applied 24–72 hours after treatment and only when the skin is not broken.
Your Griffin Health & Wellness provider will give you specific aftercare instructions based on the treatment you receive.
Who Should Not Receive EXION?
EXION isn't appropriate for everyone, which is why a proper consultation and medical history matter.
The manufacturer's clinical guide lists a number of contraindications, including certain active infections or inflammation, impaired immune function, some autoimmune conditions, poor wound healing, certain implants, pacemakers and other active electrical implants, pregnancy or nursing, certain cardiovascular conditions, anticoagulant use, active skin conditions in the treatment area, recent surgery in the area, and several additional conditions.
There are also treatment-specific considerations involving recent tanning, injectable treatments, medications, tattoos, permanent makeup, and other factors.
Always disclose your complete medical history, medications, recent aesthetic procedures, implants, and relevant skin conditions during your consultation.
